5 Things to Know This Week

Voting, Valentines Day and more going on this week.

1.  Peachtree Corners voters will head to the polls in just three weeks to elect six council members. Mike Mason is running unopposed as mayor. Registered voters should have received new voter ID cards from the Gwinnett County Elections office a few weeks ago that contain which of the three districts to vote in. Advance voting is available at George Pierce Park Mon. - Fri. from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  For more information contact the Elections office at 678-226-7210.

2. If all of the red hearts and flowers haven't been enough of a reminder, here's another, Tuesday is Valentine's Day. Don't wait until tomorrow to pick out a card or you'll get the leftovers - and believe me you don't want to give your Valentine the last card on the shelf. Also, worth noting, on this day around the year 278 A.D., Valentine, a holy priest in Rome in the days of Emperor Claudius II, was executed.

3.  You may notice some unusual signage showing up around the new city. It's to assist aerial photographers working for Gwinnett County to update its Geographical Information System (GIS). Surveyors will place temporary 10′ to 12′ black and white plastic targets in the shape of a “V,” “X,” or “T” within the public right-of-way and other public access lands in the county. All will be removed by mid-April. The county asks that you do not disturb the targets. For questions contact Barry Puckett, ITS Deputy Director at 770-822-8031 or Sharon Stevenson, GIS Manager, at 770-822-8033.

4. A giant kids consignment sale starts Tuesday, Feb. 14 and runs through Saturday, the 18th at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds. Kidsignments is a huge consignment sale for gently used kids clothes, toys, books, bikes, baby equipment, bedding, furniture, dvds, and shoes. Over 1,400 sellers participate. Started by a local mom, Jeri Lynn Cunningham. in her garage 19 years ago, it now fills two buildings at the fairgrounds; 2405 Sugarloaf Parkway in Lawrenceville 30045.

5. This week in history: On the 13th of February in 1633, Italian philosopher, astronomer and mathematician Galileo arrived in Rome to face charges of heresy for advocating Copernican theory, which holds that the Earth revolves around the Sun. Galileo officially faced the Roman Inquisition in April of that same year and agreed to plead guilty in exchange for a lighter sentence. Put under house arrest indefinitely by Pope Urban VIII, Galileo spent the rest of his days at his villa in Arcetri, near Florence, before dying on January 8, 1642. Source: This Day in History
