2011 Gwinnett School Enrollment Count Released
Peachtree Corners and Berkeley Lake schools show drop in projected student numbers.
There are 156,959 students enrolled in Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) based on an initial enrollment count conducted on the second day of school Tuesday, Aug. 9, compared to a post-Labor Day forecast of 162,459 students, according to a report issued Thursday by the school system. This is about 5,500 students below the forecast.
Last year, the school system gained 5,068 students from the first to the final count, Jorge Quintana, director of media relations for GCPS, reported Thursday. Based on these preliminary numbers, GCPS planners expect the school system's post-Labor Day enrollment to be very close to the forecast, he said.
School system planners will continue to monitor growth and do anticipate increases in student enrollment over the next few weeks, Quintana said. Remaining enrollment counts will be conducted on Aug. 15, 22, 29, and Sept. 6. Historically, enrollment continues to climb during the year with the post-Labor Day count more accurately reflecting school enrollment, he said.
The chart accompanying this story provides figures for each school in the system.

For those keeping score - Peachtree Elementary has passed the 1677 mark and is closer to 1700 and will probably surpass it. The transitory nature of the schools poplulation makes it close to impossible to predict who is coming and going. Also note that Peachtree is sized for 1300 students which puts them at almost 400 students over their capacity. In fact almost all the schools in the Norcross Cluster are at or over capacity (except for white castle).
