There are 156,959 students enrolled in Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) based on an initial enrollment count conducted on the second day of school Tuesday, Aug. 9, compared to a post-Labor Day forecast of 162,459 students, according to a report issued Thursday by the school system. This is about 5,500 students below the forecast.

Last year, the school system gained 5,068 students from the first to the final count, Jorge Quintana, director of media relations for GCPS, reported Thursday. Based on these preliminary numbers, GCPS planners expect the school system's post-Labor Day enrollment to be very close to the forecast, he said.

School system planners will continue to monitor growth and do anticipate increases in student enrollment over the next few weeks, Quintana said. Remaining enrollment counts will be conducted on Aug. 15, 22, 29, and Sept. 6. Historically, enrollment continues to climb during the year with the post-Labor Day count more accurately reflecting school enrollment, he said.
