Last Minute Labor Day Road Trips
Where can you go to celebrate the end of summer without spending a ton on gas?
We focused our list on places that could be enjoyed in one day. Here's our suggestions which are presented in alphabetical order.
Athens – There’s more to do in Athens than just cheer on the Dawgs. Just about 50 minutes away from Peachtree Corners, you can easily get there and back on one tank of gas. Check out the Athens Institute of Contemporary Art or the Georgia Museum of Art. Or tour one of the city’s many historic houses. When your day is done, dine at one of Athens many delicious restaurants. Check out Athens Patch’s directory for where to find great eats.
Augusta – Home to the Augusta National Golf Club and James Brown, there’s plenty to see and do in Augusta. The drive is about two and half hours. Take a one-hour boat tour on the Augusta Canal or tour the childhood home of President Woodrow Wilson. End the day with a walk on the Riverwalk and enjoy the gardens, live music and, of course, views of the river.
Chattanooga, TN – Chattanooga is just a two and a half hour drive from Peachtree Corners. Start your day early or plan to stay over because your day will be packed. Check out the Chattanooga Zoo or the popular Tennessee Aquarium. Enjoy the great outdoors at Rock City or Ruby Falls.
Dahlonega - This picturesque mountain town is about a 45 minute drive north of Peachtree Corners. It's home to North College & State University and has the distinction of being the historic site of the first major U.S. Gold Rush. There's plenty of shopping, strolling and food in this charming north Georgia town. Click HERE for directions.
Greenville, SC – Just over two hours away, there’s something for all ages in Greenville. The Children’s Museum of the Upstate is the 10th largest children’s museum in the world. If you like cars, visit the BMW Zentrum where you can see classic cars and learn about the carmaker’s history. The Zentrum is free, but you can also get a tour of the BMW manufacturing plant for a charge.
Helen – Enjoy the great outdoors in Helen. Go for a hike or go rafting on the river. Little girls will love a visit to Babyland General Hospital, the birthplace of the Cabbage Patch Kids in nearby Cleveland. And don’t forget to make a visit to the old German town. Helen is just about an hour and 20 minutes from Lawrenceville.
Stone Mountain - A family-friendly destination, Stone Mountain Park is built around a giant monolith. Located about a 40-minute drive east, there's plenty of entertainment for the entire family - rides to the top of the mountain, boat and train rides, and a special Labor Day Fireworks Show to end the day. Take a picnic lunch or enjoy one of the park's restaurants.
