Southern Baptists Adopt Alternative Name
'Great Commission Baptists' also can be used.
The nation's largest Protestant denomination, which includes the Peachtree Corners Baptist Church, has adopted an alternative name.
At its recent convention in New Orleans, the Southern Baptist Convention adopted the optional title "Great Commission Baptists."
"Passage of the descriptor "Great Commission Baptists" ... was momentous," reported the Baptist Press. The descriptor can be used by any church. Usage is voluntary. The change was approved by a vote of 53-46 percent.
The term "Great Commission" refers to Jesus' command to his apostles to go forth and make disciples of all nations. The term "Great Commission" also is familiar to Gwinnett residents from the recent evangelical visit by NFL quarterback Tim Tebow.
It was felt that the descriptor would be beneficial to churches especially those outside of the South whose members might view the name "Southern Baptist" negatively.
