Gwinnett County Police say a 17 year old was hit by a car while trying to cross Lawrenceville Highway Wednesday morning. 

According to Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Edwin Ritter, Dakota M. Waters was trying cross the multi-lane road between Hamilton Rd and James Rd just before 7:30am. A driver of a Land Rover was driving northbound and moved into the center lane to turn left on to James Road. Waters was reportedly standing in that center lane, the driver was unable to stop and hit the teen. 

Waters was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center in critical condition and later died.

Ritter says the driver is not facing charges at this time, however, the investigation continues.

GCPD Cpl. Jake Smith added that while the weather was not listed as a contributing factor, it was relatively dark and raining at the time of the accident.

In October, R&B singer and actress Natina Reed was also struck and killed while reportedly trying to cross Lawrenceville Highway.
