My daughter, Caitlin, is a new freshman at Norcross High School this year. I recently had the chance to sit in on a board meeting for Norcross High School Foundation for Excellence.
The meeting was made up of parents, teachers and the Principal of Norcross High School. The foundation is responsible for providing funding for programs at the school, and gives students a chance to excel in their learning.
After learning more about the foundation, I realized that this is just what the school needs to be successful. I applaud all the efforts of the current and past board members, who have taken this program underneath their wings and made it a success!
With the current cutbacks and teacher furloughs, Gwinnett County Public Schools need our support. The recent bill passed by the Georgia Legislature, makes our schools more vulnerable to further cuts and takes away the amount that a student is able to use towards his or her education.
I do not believe that we need to take any more funding away from our public school system. Instead, we need to improve upon it. Programs like Norcross High School Foundation for Excellence is a shining example of how we can move forward and build upon making our public schools work for the future.

The best investment in our children's education is becoming involved in their education. This does not mean blindly following the teachers union agenda. Spend more money is their mantra. We need to hold teachers accountable as well as the school system. Help your child show a genuine interest in their work and monitor their progress.
