My jaw literally dropped when the above picture popped into my email inbox one day in September. Standing on the Uhuru Peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest point on the African Continent at 19,340′ is Kari Kronborg, who we featured in Eve Laments Women on the Run series. Kari is the youngest member of the group of 11 women who so fittingly hail from Summit County, Colorado since they “summited” on September 16, 2011. Their ages ranged from 56 to 78!
The trip’s genesis was born out of the desire of one participant to commemorate her 70th birthday by summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro—a daunting goal. The group trained regularly on their home ground hiking Mt. Royal, Mt. Victoria and Ptarmigan Mountain.
Like training, the summiting process occurred in increments over an 8-day period. The spark of inspiration, patient preparation, and achievement of several steps in a linear process led to the accomplishment of a lifetime.
As 2011 inches toward conclusion, I reflect upon the passing year and plan for the one waiting on my doorstep. The achievement of 11 gutsy women chides me that I haven’t done enough, warns me not to sell myself short, inspires me to reach for the clouds—and maybe break through them physically and metaphorically.
Happy New Year, Readers. May you reach the peaks you climb toward in 2012!
