Moratorium Issues Discussed at City Council Meeting

Peachtree Corners Mayor acknowledges the 90-day moratorium has created issues for some residents and businesses.

In its weekly meeting the City Council met to finalize the ordinance to create the position of city manager. But the 90-day building moratorium placed by Gwinnett County was what was on most people's minds who attended the meeting. It was intended to avoid such problems as the new city of Johns Creek faced when a permit for an adult video and merchandise store, the Love Shack, was able to get permitting before the city could officially manage the planning and zoning explained Mayor Mike Mason. Unfortunately a blanket moratorium also affects homeowners seeking a building permit to build a new back deck or a business owner who wants to reconfigure the interior of an office building to accommodate a new client. "We will keep the moratorium as…

Vote no to the T-Splot. Seriously, I still haven't forgiven Gwinnett for that travesty of an idea that is the "Peach Pass" that is STILL draining us of money.   more ›

Voters Guide to the Georgia T-SPLOST

Gwinnett residents will vote on a transportation referendum on July 31, with a 1 percent sales tax at stake.

What is the T-SPLOST? The Transportation Investment Act of 2010 (TIA 2010) established 12 transportation tax regions in the state of Georgia. Each region can impose a 1 percent sales tax, with voter approval, to fund transportation projects within the region boundaries. On July 31, 2012 registered voters in Georgia will cast ballots to designate if their region will introduce a Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (T-SPLOST) for 10 years (2013-2022). Suwanee voters will vote at their regular Gwinnett County polling precincts (not City Hall.) Last year each district received input from the Georgia Department of Transportation, local governments, transit operators, and metropolitan planning organizations to create a list of …

I am so tired of being lied to by DOT and our politicians under the gold dome! If you think for one moment that these taxes will end in 10 years, ask the citizens of North Fulton who were told that the tolls would end when GA 400 was paid for. Bologne! We're still paying for it! If the politicians want to allocate taxes for roads, why not take it from the millions we pay every year to pay for the…   more ›

Driver's License Requirements to Change July 1

To be fully compliant with the Federal Real ID Act of 2005, the State of Georgia is implementing new requirements when renewing or applying for a driver's license.

Beginning July 1, 2012, the Georgia Department of Driver Services will require additional documentation when applying for or renewing your driver's license or applying for an ID card. It's all part of a national security plan to improve the security of Georgia's DL and ID cards and to be fully compliant with the Federal Real ID Act of 2005. "We all had to go through this process when we first applied for a driver's license," said Susan Sports, communications director for the DDS. Providing the required documents will only be necessary this one time she said. The only visible difference from the current DL/ID is that a gold star will be printed on the top right corner of the Secure DL and IDs. The new licensing process also is aimed at …

City Council Approves Creation of City Manager Position

City begins process to seek qualified applicants and the mayor clears up confusion over 90-day moratorium.

In a Special Called Meeting held Tuesday night at the Fowler YMCA, the Peachtree Corners City Council approved an ordinance to create the position of City Manager. Notices will go out this week seeking qualified candidates. But before the City Council took action on the city manager position, the mayor addressed concerns about the effect the 90-day moratorium, passed last week, had on the community. "We had no intention of stopping all development," said Mayor Mike Mason, "but that's what happened for a few days." It was a simple case of mis-communication with Gwinnett County the mayor told the dozen people attending. The county was to continue processing those permits that had already begun before the moratorium took effect. However, the …
