'Just Sew You Know,' A New Kind of Camp for Kids

Sewing camp offers Peachtree Corners kids a new dimension in summer camp fun.

Karen Krug runs one of the most popular children’s camps in Peachtree Corners. It isn’t a theater camp or a karate camp, it’s a sewing camp and kids are flocking to it.

Krug converted the first floor of her home into two camp rooms with sewing machines lining the bright pink walls. Above the machines are inspirational quotes to motivate the students and projects ideas they might be interested in making.

Krug grew up with in a sewing household but it was only after college that she decided to make her love of crafting a career. Originally, Krug owned a custom sewing business but when the economy took a downturn and the orders dried up she knew she had to do something different. It was then that a friend suggested to Krug that she teach sewing.

This is now the fourth year of the “Just Sew You Know” sewing camps and each year has seen more students than the last.

Krug is now enrolling students for her five-week camp that will be held in June. It is open to children ages seven to 16. The camps are half-a-day four days a week with sessions held in either the morning or afternoon.

Beginner students will learn such skills as, “Sewing machine skills, How to read a pattern and pattern assembly.”

For students with more advanced skills Krug offers projects such as making a notebook cover, a cork board organizer and a sewing machine cover. All students from beginner to advanced will be able to make and take home at least 10 items they have made themselves.

In addition to what they can bring home to Mom and Dad, the campers have a chance to make a difference to a sick child with their sewing. Each of her camps donates one special item to a children’s charity.

This year’s charity is “ConKerr,” a group that delivers colorful, handmade pillowcases to children in hospitals suffering from life-changing diseases.

The camp runs from May 31- June 30 at a cost of $220. The price includes all supplies, snacks and a charitable contribution to ConnKerr.
