Meningitis Outbreak Leads to Medication Recall

Georgia is among seven states that received shipments of medications in question.

With upwards of 105 reported meningitis cases across seven states, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA has recalled a list of 34 potentially contaminated injectable medications last week.

According to a Fox news reportΒ  the medications were sent to hospitals in 23 states that include California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Texas, and West Virginia, the CDC said in an NBC news report.

The drugs include steroids, epidural anesthetics used to block pain during childbirth, and surgery and saline solutions that are compounded to make different medications. All of the products on the recall list were made by the New England Compound Center (NECC) in Framingham, Mass., and are administered by injection into the spine. Β

Symptoms to watch for are worsening headache, fever, stiff neck, trouble walking or falling and progressing back pain.
