Remodeling; A Good Solution When Moving is Not an Option

Many Peachtree Corners residents add on to or remodel their homes so that they can stay right here.

With the home real estate market languishing, many people choose to stay in their homes instead of selling for a lower price than they’d prefer.

But there is another reason that people remodel instead of move -- they enjoy their neighborhood and friends so look for another way to add more useable space. That is the case for homeowners Rick and Tavie Allan of Peachtree Corners.

The Allans decided some time ago that they would enjoy having more room in their home which would include more family entertainment space and an in-law suite. They also preferred to stay where they and their children have already put down roots.

Tavie Allan said that as she was growing up, if her parents wanted their house to be more spacious they’d add on. Rick said that he grew up in one home as well. He says of their current house that “Our house is not an investment, it’s our home.”

The Allans compared the expenses of moving to adding what they wanted to their existing home. Just considering it financially, they said that it may have been a little, but not a lot, more economical to move. But add to that the loss of the location and neighborhood they love and the headaches of moving itself, they decided that remodeling was a much better option for them.

Sam Haney of Haney Construction, the contractor for their job, is glad to be working here in Peachtree Corners once again. He’s been in the construction business for over 40 years and he says that he always enjoys helping people make their ideas a reality.

“I like to take a concept and make it into something that they can actually see and touch.” Haney points out that this is a good time for remodeling because “workers are ready and available and prices are very competitive.”

Homeowner Allan says that he likes the process of taking a design idea for his home and bring that to completion. “At the end of the project I have something that I’ve accomplished instead of just having made a purchase.”, which would be the case if they’d bought a new house.
