Sweet German Shepherd-Corgi Mix Seeks Forever Home

Gunther is available for adoption from Angels Among Us Pet Rescue.

Meet Gunther, a male German Shepherd-Corgi mix who is about a year old and weighs about 25 pounds. He may gain a bit more weight, but not much.

This sweet boy has the face of a German Shepherd but the body of a Corgi.  Since he is so "low" to the ground, he's commonly referred to as a "low-rider,"but when it comes to love, this boy has a huge heart.

Little Gunther is neutered, micro-chipped, up-to-date on all his shots and vetting and is ready for his new home and family.

This boy came to Angels Among Us Pet Rescue when he was found as a stray, wandering around alone in a dangerous apartment complex in Gwinnett County.

Since we have no other previous information on him, it's hard to know exactly what happened to him during his time on his own, but there are obvious signs in his behavior that lead us to believe he was abused by humans at some point.  Gunther, like many rescues often do, comes with a bit of his own "baggage," and Gunther's can manifest itself when his little "world" and routine become changed and he begins to fear that his surroundings may be changing back to his life before Angels took him in.

One of the things important to know about Gunther is he must not be crated - he will be become destructive to the crate and to himself out of reaction to the fear and stress.

He is fine when left out (rarely chewing anything other than a magazine) and can see you - it gives him a feeling of security and belonging. He is OK with house training, as long as he is not left unattended for long periods of time. As you can see, routine is very important to Gunther in his little world. We can only imagine the fears he keeps inside due to something that happened to him in the past.

He is great with other dogs, kids, people, even cats. He will try to play with his foster's kitties but backs off from them if they swat at him. Gunther is also great on leash, and enjoys taking walks with his human.

Gunther does prefer a laid-back environment as he is extremely laid back himself. He is very calm for a younger dog and loves, loves, loves to cuddle with his person. He does like to play but usually in short bursts.

One of his favorite things is to be the greeter at the door when his people come home, but due to missing so much time with a loving family, like any other animal from this background, he can get a bit demanding for your attention, but settles down very quickly.

He is extremely smart and loves to chase balls and play with his toys, but don't count on him bringing them back to you - he'll just settle down and play with them, instead.

Gunther is a very loving, gentle, sometimes afraid, little dog who's looking for a stable home environment and a loving, accepting family who will open their hearts and home to welcome him in, and give him the gift of time and patience until he can blossom into the wonderful companion and buddy we know he is.

Gunther's ideal home would be one where his person or family members are home most of the day. He just wants so much to be with his humans, and gets anxious and unhappy when he can't be with them.

Gunther would be just fine for a retired person or couple, and is happiest when spending time with them, taking nice walks together, playing out in the yard, and just loving life together.

Gunther will require a fenced-in back yard with a high fence and a secure gate.  Even though he has short legs, this boy can jump.
