The Cheese Ball Incident

It's not easy being cheesy.

You should never go to events. Well OK, you can go, but not to events for which you have to prepare and serve food. I went to one last week. The event was a fund raiser for a local charity. My food: a cheese ball.

It all began so well. Full of confidence, I mixed up the ingredients for my ever popular cheese ball and stored them in the fridge to firm up. A few hours later, returning to make my cheesy ingredients into a ball, I found them a little less than firm--mushy to be exact. Not to worry, I’d just leave it until tomorrow, the day of the event.

The next morning the sun was shining, the birds were singing, and my cheese was still mushy. But the time had come to ball it up and I was determined to do just that. Have you ever tried to form pudding into a ball? Exactly. Somehow I pressed this stuff into submission, rolled it quickly over pecans to coat it, miraculously covered it with plastic wrap, and popped it into the refrigerator before it had time to argue.

As the day progressed toward the evening event, I became anxious about my cheese ball’s viscosity. Hey, if you’re going to be anxious about something it might as well be viscosity. Finally, in desperation, I decided to hedge my bet and slip it into the freezer. That of course left me with the new anxiety of having to remember to take it out of the freezer before it was frozen solid. My husband looked a little puzzled when he came home to find random notes around the house reading “CHEESE BALL.” I hope he didn’t take it personally.

In the end it all worked out. The cheese ball made it to the event. It was spreadable without being rock solid. And my mental health was somewhat restored. Somewhat. I still feel a little shiver up my spine when I walk into a grocery store. Eventually I may try some aversion therapy and actually touch a block of cream cheese. But in the meantime I’ll make the most sensible choice and not go to events.
