View Finder: Photo Gallery of 5K & Fun Run at Norcross High

Each week we'll focus our camera lens on popular places and events in Peachtree Corners and Berkeley Lake.

Amelia Earhart, famous pilot and Amelia Watson, Norcross High School student both have something in common besides their first names. They are both pioneer women. Where Earhart earned recognition as the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, Watson has earned recognition in founding the race to raise funds to benefit the track and field program at her high school.

Amelia Watson, daughter of Cliff Watson and Sonja Rasmussen, began her running career about the age of four and has been running ever since. As a high school junior, she foresaw the need to raise funds for the cross country, track and field programs so she ran with the idea. (pun intended)

After seeing 256 participants of all ages check in today for the 5K run in the rain, and about 40 fun runners who signed up for a five lap splash party on the track (still raining with big puddles to run through) the event was declared a roaring success, especially considering the liquid sunshine and cold temperatures that persisted for the duration of the two races.

Officially known as the Norcross Blue Devils Run, I would like to suggest that from this day on, the official race name be changed to the Amelia Watson 5K & Fun Run because of Amelia's dedication in making this event come to fruition.

Congratulations on your fine work Amelia! You are a true pioneer on the right track!
