Help Fowler YMCA Feed Families in Need

The Peachtree Corners facility is providing 11 local families with food each weekend. Can you help the Y fight hunger in our community?

Across the country, Monday morning comes and many teachers are forced to compete against hunger for their student's attention.

How can a child focus on learning to read when he or she is trying to ignore hunger pangs?

In 2011-12, Gwinnett County Schools reported that just over 90 percent of children attending Meadowcreek, Nesbit, Norcross and Stripling Elementary Schools, qualified for free or reduced price meals - getting the fuel that they need to get them through the week.

But what happens to these children when they go home over the weekend? What do they eat?

With more and more families finding it hard to keep nutritious food on their table, Fowler Y is making a difference.

In an effort to help children get the food they need for the weekend, each Friday Y staff and volunteers fill backpacks with food and deliver them to 11 families in our community - families who otherwise would do without.

The backpacks are returned to the Y on Monday and are refilled for the following weekend.

If you are able to join the Y in helping to fight hunger in our community, contact deborahh@ymcaatlanta.org at the Y.

With your help, we can provide for more and continue to strengthen the foundations of our community.
