Brasstown Valley: For the Romantic Golfer - If There is Such a Thing

If the 2011 PGA Championship has made the golfing bug bite, consider a trip to the Brasstown Valley Resort in the Georgia Mountains.

Wish you could play golf at the Atlanta Athletic Club? Concerned about the traffic and general congestion that 40,000 PGA “guests” might have on Peachtree Corners? Then grab your clubs and hit the road for the Brasstown Valley Resort and Spa, nestled deep in the North Georgia Mountains.

The course at the Brasstown Valley Resort has been ranked as one of Golf Digest’s top courses to play. You can even get some help improving your swing with the resort’s Golf Skills Challenges, providing instruction and practice in a relaxed setting. But Brasstown Valley is also well known for accommodating the incurable romantic.

Your escape to a romantic weekend in the mountains can include champagne and chocolates upon arrival, a massage and even a manicure and pedicure along with excellent dining.

If Mother Nature should happen to beckon you from your romantic accommodations or off of the golf course, you can go rock climbing, mountain biking and hiking along the Appalachian Trail. If the water is your passion, there is white water and tube rafting as well as kayaking and canoeing or just a peaceful, guided tour of nearby Lake Chatuge.  Brasstown Valley even offers bird watching and botany excursions for nature lovers.

The 500-acre resort is located deep in the heart of the Chattahoochee National Forest, near Young Harris, Ga. The Brasstown Bald – the highest summit in Georgia at nearly 4,800 feet – affords views of Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina.

From Peachtree Corners, Brasstown Valley is a little over two hours away via a picturesque drive through the North Georgia Mountains.

Just take GA-400 North to Dahlonega. And just in case you’ve not been to Dahlonega – which is another great little getaway – you’re going to take GA-400 North for about 35 miles to GA-60, turning left and following GA-60 into Dahlonega. At East Main Street in Dahlonega, take a left (this is US-19) and follow it for about 35 miles to Blairsville.

Let’s stop for a moment here for a navigational tip that will be useful both here and on future forays through Georgia.

Keep in mind that there are a few occasions when the highway veers off or even does an abrupt turn but, odd as it may seem, remains the same highway number or road name. Even stranger is the fact that the more “straight” or direct route that you actually need to turn off of simply changes highway number or name and continues on. It’s wierd and it's a common occurrence in Georgia - and it can get you lost if you don’t watch the signs carefully. Old timers say it was to keep the Yankees from knowing where they are, should they ever came back.  Obviously, that didn’t work.

Now, back to the directions.

In Blairsville, go through the roundabout and continue heading north for a short distance to US-76, also known as Southern Highroads Trail.  You’ll enter or merge onto US-76 East via a standard highway ramp, turning left off of GA-19 onto the ramp that swings you around onto US-76 for 12 miles until you reach Young Harris. Then just follow the signs to Brasstown Valley Resort.

Have fun and enjoy your round (or two) of golf.
