NHS Student Art Work Honored

Two Norcross High School students work was chosen to be a part of the Atlanta Dogwood Festival High School Art Exhibit.

Norcross High School has a lot going for it and one is the fine art department. There are many talented students honing their artistic skill in the art classrooms of Norcross. As a result of that talent and the good direction and support of their teachers, two of those students, Julio Garcia and Abby Holtz, work was chosen to be entered this year into the Dogwood Arts Festival High School Art Exhibit.

Garcia's piece, placing 9th in the show, is a relief of clay faces called "Macbeth Witches." Holtz' piece, placing 8th, is a monotype titled "Bearden's Buddy Bob."

In talking to Garcia I learned of his great love of art. He is very glad to have his work displayed in the festival. He said,”Exposure is very important to a high school art student. Being around good artists is important for someone like me who wants to learn more.”

Each of the Norcross art teachers submitted a piece of artwork from two of their students. Any students work selected to be in the show was then judged by a panel of three judges.

Martha Cook, Fine Arts department chairman at Norcross explained that this is a great opportunity for students. “This competition is extremely competitive and difficult to get work in to. The students accepted into this show have their work on display for thousands of people to see.”

The students that place in this show also have their work displayed at the Art Institute of Atlanta, Savannah College of Art and Design (Atlanta), and American Inter Continental University. They are awarded prizes, scholarship opportunities and art supplies.

For those who’d like to enjoy the students' artwork in person, Norcross HS is hosting a Norcross Cluster Art Show on April 28 and 29. It’s open to the public from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 28. With artwork primarily by the high school students, the show includes work from students at Pinckneyville Middle and Simpson Elementary as well.
