Local Author Offers Sound Advice

Peachtree Corners resident Jeff Armbruster is the author of the book Practical Lessons in Leadership, a book with a solid message for all of us.

We’re all leaders in one way or another. Whether it be in our family, with friends or as an executive of a company, sooner or later leadership becomes a part of our life. Recognizing that, Jeff Armbruster put pen to paper to give us a practical perspective on this important topic.

After 30+ years of working for the U.S. Geological Survey, Armbruster was asked to develop a leadership program for the organization. As a result of those leadership training classes, many of his former students asked that he follow up by sending them continued advice and encouragement.

Taking that request to heart he began to do just that by at first sending them quotes from others and eventually writing essays himself about various qualities of a leader. From these essays was born his book, Some Practical Lessons in Leadership, Observations from Daily Life.

After requests and promptings from many, Armbruster consolidated his 75 essays to a total of 52 and then waited. For over a year he puzzled over what the epilogue to this book should be. He said that during a sermon it came to him how to conclude the book.

He explains that service with humility, “aggressive humility” as he calls it, is the key to all leadership. As he says in his book, “True leadership is about serving others, not being served.” You see this concept revisited in various scenarios throughout his essays.

Armbruster, a Roman Catholic, finds all that he writes and stands for a result of his faith. He is quick to point out that all of the leadership principles set forth in the book are applicable to any situation and for people of all faiths.

He covers a wealth of practical topics such as expressing gratitude, treating others with dignity, and the concepts of constancy and trustworthiness, just to name a few. The book applies to so many areas of our lives. As one reader remarks,” This book really makes you think about the right way to live.” I’d say it is definitely worth the read.
