Mommy, What Can We Do This Week-end?

Fun activities to entertain, energize and exhaust your kids this weekend!

There are lots of exciting things to do this week-end in our area!

  • If you have young children, a good start to the weekend is a story-time for preschoolers. There are several from which to choose: 10:15 at the Norcross Library, 10:30 at the Ocee Library in Johns Creek or 11:30 at the Duluth Library. There is also one on Saturday mornings at 11:00 at Barnes & Noble in Duluth or at the Forum.
  • On Friday and on Sat at 11am, head downtown to Duluth's New Dawn Theatre for a  Rising Stars production of "Snow White's Birthday Surprises". This show has lots of audience participation, so it is a great introduction to the theater for young children. Tickets are just $5 and can be purchased at the door.
  • The new Kidtoon movie for March is "The Gruffalo and the Wiggles". You can see it for only $2 every Saturday this month at 11am at The Studio Movie Grill on Holcomb Bridge.
  • Friday, March 2, is Dr Seuss' Birthday! For some fun ways to celebrate, Click HERE.
  • The Duluth History Museum at The Strickland House is still hosting "Celebrating 100 Years of Girl Scouting" from 12 until 3 on Friday and Saturday. Call 770-232-7584 or www.duluthhistorical.org.
  • Get some indoor exercise at Sky Zone indoor trampoline park or play laser tag at Laser Voyage Cafe. Both will be open for action all week-end! Other indoor choices in Johns Creek are Catch Air or Great Play, which is offering a great discount this week!
  • For outdoor adventure, the 4PM Friday Feeding Time at   Autrey Mill Nature Preserve is always a big hit. Or, on Saturday and Sunday at 1:00pm, the Chattahoochee Nature Center in Roswell has a Family Trail Hike, followed by a Creature Feature at 2PM.
  • If you prefer to ride instead of walk, how about a train ride at the the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth from 10am -5Pm on  Saturday.
  • Just 2 miles from the Mall of Georgia is one of Gwinnett counties crown jewels, the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center. This weekend you can enjoy their exhibits "Living in Space" and "Petticoats & Slide Rules". You could also learn about the Summer Equinox through demonstrations and crafts.
  • Another exciting event this week-end on their property is the grand re-opening of Treetop Quest! Feel the adrenaline rush as you climb, jump, zip, and swing from tree to tree at heights up to 55 feet off the ground! Defy gravity with suspension and monkey bridges, Tarzan jumps, flying foxes, and soaring zip lines – all in the complete confidence and safety of Treetop Quest belay system. They even have a specially designed course so that kids as young as 4 can get in on the fun! My family visited last season and you can read my review HERE.
  • Do you have an aspiring ballerina in your home? If so, you don't want to miss Gwinnett Ballet's "Cinderella". For one day only, on Saturday at 2:30 or at 7:30, they will perform at the Gwinnett Performing Arts Center.  Purchase tickets  HERE.
  • The Duluth Symphony will be performing a FREE concert for the whole family on Sunday night at 7PM the New Dawn Theatre.

If you don't mind driving a little further, here are some other options for this week-end:

  • Opening Night of "The Golden Ticket", a children's opera sung in English, based on the beloved book, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" will be on Saturday at 8PM at Cobb Energy Center. This looks delightful! Purchase tickets HERE.
  • Woodruff Arts Center Galleria will transform on Saturday into Families Centerstage, a family fun fair with live performances, arts, crafts and music for the whole family to enjoy! Vendors include The Center for Puppetry Arts, Atlanta History Center, The Atlanta Symphony, Macaroni Kid! and much more. Your tickets also include admission to either the 1:00 pm or 4:00 pm performance of "The Wizard of Oz". There are only nine more public performances - Saturdays and Sundays at 1:00pm and 3:30pm, from Mar 3-March 11, 2012 on the Alliance Stage. Purchase tickets by visiting online at www.alliancetheatre.org/oz. Get $5 off by using promo code AJC5 online or at box office.
  • You can still take a trip around the galaxy with "Space!" at The Center for Puppetry Arts. This show will end on March 11th. See my review HERE.
  • On Mondays, the Georgia Aquarium has a Me & Mommy Special Offer (or dads and caregivers, too!) For only $34.95, you get free parking and admission to the Aquarium, AT&T Dolphin Tales, 3D Wondershow and "Frogs - A Chorus of Colors" for one adult and four kids age 5 and under. Amazing deal! This offer is only valid Monday-Thursday and can only be purchased online. Offer ends March 8, 2012.

So, turn off the TV, put the kids in the car and find an adventure this week-end. There are tons of ways to entertain, energize and exhaust your kids!!
