Top Spots to Celebrate Black History Month in Gwinnett

Throughout February there are events and activities all around the county including two activities in Peachtree Corners, a reading relay Feb. 4 at the library and a genealogy workshop at the Hilton Hotel on Feb. 28.

Gwinnett County is celebrating Black History Month with a number of activities.

Here is a list of events throughout the county that will pay homage to African-American history in February.

 1. “Black Women in American History and Culture” Exhibit

What: The exhibit is comprised of news articles, magazine clippings and other documentation relating to local Black women’s contributions to American history.

2.  Local Fraternities and Sororities Volunteer Time

What:  Each Saturday during the month of February members from two organizations, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, as well as some of the youth they mentor, will be reading books at various branches to honor the many contributions and achievements of African Americans, past and present, while promoting literacy in our community. All ages welcome.

7. Akbar Imhotep Storytelling

What: Join storyteller Akbar Imhotep as he weaves fables and songs in celebration of Black History Month. Drums and puppets give life to African folktales! All ages welcome.

8. Second Annual MLK Jr. Unity Breakfast

What: The breakfast will serve as an opportunity to celebrate the legacy of service of King and create an imperative to live out his legacy throughout our homes and our communities. This year’s program during Black History Month will acknowledge and recognize individuals, groups and corporations within the Gwinnett community promoting diversity through leadership, innovation, and community volunteerism.

When: 9 a.m. - 11 a.m., Saturday, February 25, 2012

9. "Holla At Ya Ancestors" Genealogy Workshop

What: Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau and Johnette Brooks of "Holla At Ya Ancestors" present, "How to Honor your African-American Ancestors by Tracing, Documenting, Publishing & Donating Your Family History." Brooks will discuss tips and techniques for conducting African-American genealogical research. Learn  to navigate the United States Census, slaveholder records, family histories and other resources to piece together your family history. Reservations required. Free. Lunch will be served.
