5 Things to Know This Week

It's back to work and school for Peachtree Corners and Berkeley Lake residents.

1. Burr, it's cold out there. Though the winter solstice occurred on Dec. 21, today is the first time it's really felt like winter. The National Weather Service is predicting sunshine with a high near 36. Northwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. And tonight, NWS is calling for clear skies with a low around 19 with winds out of the northwest between 5 and 10 mph and gusts as high as 15 mph. The weather should warm slightly by Friday with the highs expected to be 61 degrees.

2. Gwinnett County Public Schools are back in session after the winter break. Watch for school buses and the usual heavy traffic to return today.

3. Gwinnett County offices are open today after being closed on Monday for the New Year's Day holiday.

4. The county has issued a NO BURN day for Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012 due to high winds and dry conditions. Relative humidity values of 25 percent or less are expected for four hours or more this afternoon with northwest winds around 15 mph with higher guests. These conditions make for high fire conditions through the early evening.

5. There are just 63 days until Peachtree Corners residents head to the polls to elect six council members to help run the new city. The mayoral seat has only one candidate, Mike Mason, who will run unopposed as the new mayor of the county's 16th city. Stay tuned to Peachtree Corners Patch for full coverage.
