Try Palomilla’s Grill House for Authentic Cuban Cuisine

This Peachtree Corners restaurant has been serving good Cuban food for over five years.

As you enter you find yourself in an unassuming grill-type restaurant. But what you can assume is that after you order you’ll be served some tasty and authentic Cuban cuisine.

Owner Elizardo Sanz is proud of the two restaurants that he has established here in the Atlanta area. This Palomilla’s on Spalding Drive just past Holcomb Bridge Road has been open for over five years and he has recently opened a new Palomilla’s in Johns Creek. Sanz says that “ Business in Peachtree Corners is good. It’s a really nice area and very nice customers.”

In 1994 Sanz made it safely to the U.S. on a raft from Cuba; a life changing experience to be sure. In chatting with him about South Florida where he lived for sometime and where I grew up, he asked if I was familiar with a restaurant in West Palm Beach called Don Ramon’s.

As it happens we never fail to eat there every time we visit the area. Sanz told me that for seven years after coming to the states he lived with the family who owns that and two other South Florida Cuban restaurants. Small world. That information alone made me eager to try the food at Palomilla’s.

Sanz stressed that the one thing most important to him is the authenticity of the food in his restaurant. He strives to serve real Cuban food and based on what I tasted and saw on his menu that’s what he does. On board now is a new Cuban chef with 20 years experience who also has a passion for serving traditional Cuban food.

After talking to Sanz about the restaurant, I was treated to a sampler platter of many of the favorite dishes and I enjoyed them all. When asking about which dishes are most frequently ordered Sanz said that one-third of their sales are on pork. So the pork roast was the first thing I tasted and I saw the appeal.

One thing that I noticed with several of the meat dishes that I tried was the subtlety of the spices, each very nice and different than the others. The pork roast, Lechon Asado, was seasoned with a mojo marinade and I was told was roasted long and slow. The chicken chunks, Chicharron de Pollo, seemed to have a hint of lime.

I tried a very tasty stuffed potato dish, Papa Rellena, which looked like a baked potato but wasn’t. It is lightly seasoned mashed potatoes stuffed with ground beef and then deep fried. I also enjoyed an Empanada and some grilled sea bass.

If you’re interested in serving this food at an event, catering is available. For more information on Palomilla’s go to www.palomillasatlanta.com.

Eating at Palomilla’s Grill House was a very tasty experience and I will definitely go back. You’ll find me there when I have a longing for some of the good Cuban food that I grew up with in South Florida. Stop in yourself for a taste of the tropics here in Peachtree Corners.
