City Recognizes Volunteer Organizations at Council Meeting

Five groups were presented proclamations during the Peachtree Corners City Council meeting on Tuesday, April 16.

During Tuesday night's meeting Peachtree Corners Mayor Mike Mason and the City Council presented proclamations to volunteer groups for their community efforts.

Mayor Mason presented the following proclamations:

Peachtree Corners Festival Committee: Recognized for their volunteer efforts on behalf of the community. The festival is held annually on the second weekend of June. Activities include arts and crafts, music, food, road race, all designed to bring the community together.

United Peachtree Corners Civic Association (UPCCA): Recognized for the the organization's contributions to the city and its residents. The non-profit organization represents homeowners in working to preserve property values, through land use matters and monitoring zoning proposals.

Peachtree Corners Logo Committee: Recognized the citizen-based group in developing a unique logo for the city. Their work was recognized nationally. Accent Creative Group, who helped develop the logo, received a Gold Award for its work.

Clean Up Peachtree Corners: Recognizing the efforts of the volunteers who organize and clean up areas of the city every spring and to declare April as the Great American Clean-Up Month. The city works in partnership with Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful on recycling, litter prevention and public maintenance.

Earth Day: The City of Peachtree Corners issued a proclamation supporting Earth Day, April 22, 2013 and encouraging all citizens to celebrate and protect the environment and contribute to a sustainable community.

Also on the list was a proclamation to recognize Nicholas Poulos, a 7th grader from Wesleyan School who won the state Spelling Bee recently. However, he and his family were not able to attend due to a death in the family. The proclamation will be presented at a later date.

In other news, City Council approved a proposed agreement with Gwinnett County for the Gwinnett County Tax Commissioner to bill and collect Ad Valorem taxes for 2013 which includes real property and personal property.

The county will collect the taxes and dispurse the amount to the city on a weekly basis. The agreement stipulates the cost shall not exceed 2 percent.

"They'll collect our taxes and bill us what it costs them to do the job," said Julian Jackson, Peachtree Corners city manager. "It's a lot less than one person would cost."

The City Council also heard first reads on:

  • Crowell Brothers Funeral Home's request for a Special Use Permit
  • Chase Bank's request to remove the requirement for 24 foot-side drive-thru lanes.
  • An city ordinance to establish a document for soil erosion, sedimentation and pollution control.
  • An ordinance to amend Chapter 6 (alcoholic beverages) of the city's code to authorize certain types of establishments to sell beer and/or wine and to authorize wine tastings and malt beverage tastings, to authorize use of growlers for certain package malt beverage licensees.

City Council will hold a Public Hearing and Second Read on these items at its May 7th meeting.
