Gwinnett Place CID Offers Tips on Preventing Graffiti

Painting over graffiti quickly reduces rate of repeat occurrences to near-zero.

Graffiti is unsightly and it invites more. There are basic steps that virtually any business can take to deter or limit graffiti incidents.

Here are a few tips recommended by the Gwinnett Place CID, Gwinnett County Police and Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful.

  • Paint over graffiti as quickly as possible
  • If vandals are caught in the act, call 911 immediately.
  • Use lighting, landscaping and general property maintenance to discourage graffiti.
  • Incorporate shrubs, thorny plants, and vines to restrict vandal access.

The key to success is covering the graffiti quickly. Studies show that applying a new paint job within 24 to 48 hours results in a near-zero rate of repeat occurrences.

Making ongoing property maintenance a priority is another preventative step. Litter, broken fixtures, ragged landscaping and poor lighting only encourage crime.

Improving and enhancing exterior lighting is the No. 1 -- and often the least expensive -- deterrent to crime followed closely by limiting access to a property.
