Hot Topics: 'Eastwooding,' Global Drought and Assassination Plots

Want to be part of the national conversation? Check out some of the most popular news stories.

A new catchphrase is trending after Clint Eastwood spoke to an invisible Obama during the Republican National Convention: it's called "Eastwooding." Photos of people speaking to empty chairs started popping up on Twitter, Facebook and instagram, and a Twitter account, @InvisibleObama, sprung up almost instantly.

With quips like, "I'm on the other side of you, Ryan," "Oh no my invisible self didn't!" and "Global warming's invisible too? Oh it's on now," the account had over 20,000 followers by the time Eastwood's speech was done.

On a more serious note, the U.S. hasn't been the only country experiencing intense drought conditions. The World Bank announced that global food prices rose 10 percent in July, while foods like maize and soybeans rose 25 percent. Our production of corn is facing the lowest production rates since the 1930s. The hardest hit are developing nations, like Mozambique and South Sudan.

"While many are worrying about filling their gas tanks, many others around the world are struggling to fill their stomachs, and it is getting more and more difficult every day," Zoellick told a meeting of foreign ministers at the time, according to CNN

Did you follow the story of the four soldiers who set up a militia and plotted to kill President Obama? Georgia prosecutors said they would seek death sentences for the three of the accused, who were stationed at Fort Stewart.

The group murdered a former soldier and his girlfriend, allegedly concerned that he would leak information about the group, . According to Huffington Post, "the soldiers had come up with a range of wild and violent plots, including a takeover of Fort Stewart, poisoning apple orchards in Washington state and planting bombs in public parks."

In an emotionally charged scene, the stepfather of the murdered soldier, Michael Roark, bolted across the floor toward one of the suspects, screaming, "You... killed my kid!"

This touches one of the problems with a Fri pick up schedule. Folks who take weekend trips areRead More caught with either leaving the cans out or missing out by not putting their trash out. Since homeowners have zero choices under our government mandated trash plan to pay in advance for service without the ability to change carriers with different pick up dates, leaving the cans out is the results. IF the new city can change our pickup day to Mon or Tue this problem would be stopped or reduced

This is one of those "government mandated" services that actually are worth while. ImagineRead More 5 different garbage collectors going around PC every week stopping at every 5th home. But perhaps the city will attempt to get earlier in the week service for us. My household has good relations with our neighbors and they are more than happy to do the chore for us, as we they.

It's my understanding that a Monday or Tuesday pickup day is one of the stipulations in the RFP theRead More city sent out. You can review the RFP on the city's website.
