I-85 Construction to Resume July 5

No work planned for the holiday weekend.

As part of the conversion of the existing , the Georgia Department of Transportation will continue work to install more than 60 signs along the I-85 corridor next week.

Daytime and nighttime work is planned. Traffic pacing may occur between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m.

This week, as weather permits, one or two segments of the HOV or inside lanes along the median wall in both directions will be closed during the overnight hours. Northbound lane closures will take place between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. and southbound closures will occur from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Up to three lanes could be closed after midnight.

Traffic will be paced one to three times as needed. Overnight lane closures may occur at the following locations:

  • Tuesday, July 5 through Thursday, July 7 - Work will occur on I-85 south from Sugarloaf Parkway to Boggs Road Overpass and close the left or HOV lane. 
  • Tuesday, July 5 - Work will occur on I-85 south Northcrest Road to Chamblee Tucker Road and close the left or HOV lane.  Three lanes will be closed on I-85 north from Chamblee Tucker Rd to Northcrest Road.
  • Wednesday, July 6 - Work is planned on I-85 north from Pleasant Hill Road to Duluth Highway/SR120 Overpass closing the two left lanes.
  • Thursday, July 7 – Work is planned on I-85 north from Indian Trail Rd to Beaver Ruin Road closing the three left lanes.
  • Friday, July 8 - Work is planned on I-85 north at Beaver Ruin Rd closing the left HOV lane. Work is also planned for I-85 north from Northcrest Road to Jimmy Carter Blvd closing the two left lanes.

 Daytime work is expected to take place in the following locations in the northbound lanes from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the southbound lanes from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.:

  • Tuesday, July 5 - Work will occur on I-85 south only closing the left lane or HOV lane from Indian Trail Road to Pleasant Hill Road.
  • Wednesday, July 6 – Work will occur on I-85 south closing the left lane or HOV lane from Duluth Highway/SR120 Overpass to Sugarloaf Parkway.
  • Thursday, July 7 - Work will occur on I-85 north only closing the left lane or HOV lane from Pleasant Hill Road to Beaver Ruin Road.
  • Friday, July 8 - Work will occur on I-85 north closing the left lane or HOV lane from Boggs Road Overpass & SR316 to Old Peachtree Road.

The I-85 Express Lanes Project includes installation of 16 miles of fiber and signage along Interstate Highway 85 between Chamblee Tucker Road and Old Peachtree Road and along State Route 316 between I-85 and Riverside Parkway.

When completed, registered transit buses, motorcycles, alternative fueled vehicles and vehicles with three or more passengers will be allowed to use the inside (left) HOT lane for free, while single and double occupant vehicles will be allowed to use the lane if they choose to pay a variably priced toll.
