I-85 Road Work Continues

HOV to HOT lane conversion underway.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is currently converting the existing . The conversion is expected to be completed this fall according to officials with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT).

The project will result in lane closures in DeKalb and Gwinnett counties as weather permits. This week, daytime work will result in the closure of the HOV lane along the median wall in one or two locations. Work hours are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the northbound lanes and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the southbound lanes.

This week, road work is planned as follows:

  • Tuesday, March 29 – Expect roadwork from one mile south of Steve Reynolds Boulevard to Boggs Road and a second work zone from Northcrest Road to one mile south of SR 140/Jimmy Carter Boulevard.
  • Wednesday, March 30 - Expect roadwork from one mile south of Steve Reynolds Boulevard to Boggs Road and a second work zone from Northcrest Road to one mile south of SR 140/Jimmy Carter Boulevard.
  • Thursday, March 31 – Expect roadwork from Northcrest Road to one mile south of SR 140/Jimmy Carter Boulevard and a second work zone from Chamblee Tucker Road north for one mile.
  • Friday, April 1- Expect roadwork from Northcrest Road to one mile south of SR 140/Jimmy Carter Boulevard.

Weather permitting, north and southbound HOV lane closures are planned for Tuesday and Wednesday night. Northbound lane closures will begin at 10 p.m. and continue overnight to 5 a.m. the next day. Southbound lane closures will begin at 8 p.m. and continue until 5 a.m. the next day.

On the weekends, crews will continue work on concrete foundations for new overhead structures. The structures will support the technological infrastructure and signage needed to operate the Express Lane System. Work this weekend will require lane closures on north and southbound sections of I-85. Beginning at 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday, the two left lanes of I-85 north and one left lane of I-85 south will close. The lanes will be closed from Northcrest Road in DeKalb County to south of SR 140/Jimmy Carter Boulevard to Indian Trail Road in Gwinnett County.

The I-85 Express Lanes Project includes installation of 16 miles of fiber and signage along Interstate Highway 85 between Chamblee Tucker Road and Old Peachtree Road and along State Route 316 between I-85 and Riverside Parkway.

When completed, registered transit buses, motorcycles, alternative fueled vehicles and vehicles with three or more passengers will be allowed to use the inside (left) HOT lane for free, while single and double occupant vehicles will be allowed to use the lane if they choose to pay a variably priced toll.
