Take to the Skies and Fly Like an Eagle -- If You Dare

For an adventure of a lifetime, head south of Atlanta for skydiving fun.

While some vacationers prefer continuous quiet and serene lakeside views on their precious days off, thrill-seekers far and wide often take a very different course of action in Georgia.

About a 90-minute drive south of Peachtree Corners, in Thomaston, is the longest running skydiving facility in Georgia that supplies free-falling fun for beginners and experts of the air, Skydive Atlanta.  This company has the the only facility in Georgia certified by the United States Department of Defense to carry military paratroopers.

For new skydivers, a simple 15-minute class is required on the ground for orientation and free fall rules to follow. All new skydivers fall in tandem – or are connected – with an instructor for reasons of due safety and education. For those with more experience, an Accelerated Free Fall class is available for up to six hours, which enable a skydiver to free fall in style alone.

After these classes are completed, skydivers are suited up with a jumpsuit, goggles, a radio and a safety helmet. Each skydiver is outfitted with a primary ram-air parachute and a secondary safety chute.

Next, divers and instructors are taken over 2 1/2 miles up in a small aircraft. Once the doors are opened, divers drop out – free falling until they are about a mile from the ground. That’s when the chutes are pulled and divers glide back to earth with remote radio instruction.
