Selling Your Home? Time to Declutter

Hold a garage sale and clear out the clutter it will make your home sell more quickly and for a higher price. Check out the garage sale at Peachtree Station this weekend.

Our team has sponsored many garage sales in the Peachtree Corners area over the past few years. In fact, we are sponsoring one this weekend in Peachtree Station.

Our sponsorship in such an event is multi faceted. Garage sales go hand in hand with our declutter your home mantra. No, people will not sell enough to completely declutter the home as a rule. However, it will get them on the right path whether they are considering selling or just want to clear out a few items.

We like being part of an activity that brings neighbors together and promotes community spirit.

So rain or shine people flood into our garage sales by the hundreds. Clutter disappears.

Knowing that it is the best time in history for someone to buy a home is influencing sellers to put their homes on the market. This decision means preparation on the part of the seller. In the past we have talked about updating and staging but the most mileage you will get will be from decluttering. We wrote an article a few months back about clutter but with garage sale season here, we feel it is a great time to remind you, of the value of getting rid of stuff.

Do a room by room sweep and eliminate anything that you do not have to keep. Pack it now or pack it later. Why not pack it now when it may mean extra money in your pocket.

It is time to live like a minimalist. Homes with less look larger. There are no distractions for a buyer's eye. Eliminate most wall decor and keep it simple. No groupings. It’s time to put those family photos away.

Bookshelves are notorious for collecting stuff. Think three. No more than 3 items per shelf.

Clutter is not limited to your interior. Eliminate clutter in your exterior as well. Do not have clutter on your deck or in your backyard.

Be careful in the entry and keep the front sidewalk and entry clutter free. Watch out for lawn art. It can be distracting as well. Your college flags and cute little gnomes may not be cute to your potential buyer. Simplicity is the name of the game.

Window treatments can appear to be clutter, as well. Heavy window treatments with shears and fringe might be beautiful but can be an eyesore to the person who loves to see windows and craves daylight.

Closets and cabinets, our favorite place to hide stuff, need to be cleared out. Rent a storage room or throw it away. Once again leave space between hangers.

Clean, clutter-free rooms with daylight pouring through creates a feeling of space and air. Buyers should see rooms not stuff. Have you ever visited a model home? OK, that is the goal. Strive to make your home the model home. Clutter free homes sell faster and for more money.

It makes it worthwhile to give up your ceramic rabbit collection, or your 10-year-old Southern Living magazines when you can see dollar signs flashing in front of your eyes. You must take the attitude that your home is now a product to sell. It is now time to fall in love with a new home.

New on the market this week. Great homes ready for you to love.
