Widening and Improvements Still on Table for S.R. 141

Peachtree Parkway, a main artery through Peachtree Corners, is on the list for possible intersection improvements and widening.

The Executive Committee of the Atlanta Regional Roundtable, working on formalizing a list of $6.14 billion worth of transportation projects for a potential one-penny sales tax, is nearing the deadline for a final list of projects.

While the list is not complete at this point, the improvements to S.R. 141 could end up as one of the projects to be funded by the 1 cent sales tax.

Of concern to many Peachtree Corners residents is the possible widening of S.R. 141 (Peachtree Parkway) from four to six lanes. However, if the state road is selected, it doesn't necessarily mean that the road will become a six-lane highway as some fear.

"The potential scope is to include six lanes, but it could mean that the road will not be widened but rather the funds will be spent instead on improving one or more of the intersections," said Brian Allen, Transportation Director for Gwinnett County.

He pointed to the possibility of widening the southbound lane that merges with Peachtree Industrial Boulevard to ease traffic congestion. At the intersection of Holcomb Bridge Road two lanes of southbound traffic must merge into one before merging again onto Peachtree Industrial Boulevard which is often a major tie-up for drivers during the morning rush hour making their way south toward I-285.

Allen also mentioned that other intersections along the stretch of road between Holcomb Bridge Road and the Chattahoochee River may be considered for improvement.

There is an opportunity for Peachtree Corners residents to voice their opinion by visiting the Atlanta Regional Round Table's website to leave a comment on the S.R. 141 widening project.

The voters will decide next summer on whether to approve the 1 cent sales tax, however, your input is needed.

David Manley, a Peachtree Corners resident pointed out that the deadline for making your voice heard is now. "I understand the comment period will conclude on Friday, Sept. 30 and the list will be finalized and passed on to the DOT next month," said Manley in his email message.
