WEATHER UPDATE: 'Wintry Mix' Predicted for Friday

The crisp dry weather and clear skies is expected to give way to freezing rain and snow by the end of the week.

Weather forecast update:

This morning the National Weather Service reports that Thursday will be mostly sunny with high temperature around 50 degrees. The original report called for a "wintry mix" to roll in around 3 p.m.

The good news is it appears now we're in for another day of sunshine but Friday will be a different story. The NWS forecast for tomorrow is:

  • A chance of rain or freezing rain before 1pm, then rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 37. East wind 5 to 10 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Little or no ice accumulation expected.

That means there is a chance that school will be cancelled. We will post any news of school closings as soon as possible. In the meantime, expect a run at the grocery stores.

The threat of cold, wet weather is looming for Peachtree Corners and Gwinnett later this week.

According to the National Weather Service, there is a "chance" of freezing rain and sleet after 3 p.m. Thursday and on Friday, more freezing rain and sleet is predicted before before 1 p.m. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph.

The low Thursday night is forecast to be about 29 degrees. An Arctic air mass and moisture moving into the area is blamed.

The NWS hazardous weather outlook reads in part:

THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY... AN ARCTIC AIRMASS WILL BE MOVING INTO THE EASTERN HALF OF THE UNITED STATES ON THURSDAY SETTING UP A COLD AIR WEDGE ACROSS NORTH AND CENTRAL GEORGIA. AT THE SAME TIME MOISTURE FROM THE WEST AND SOUTHWEST IS EXPECTED TO RISE UP AND OVER THE COLD AIR AT THE SURFACE. THE COMBINATION OF THESE INGREDIENTS WILL SET THE STAGE FOR POSSIBLE FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET OVERNIGHT THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING.

The wintry threat should end by the weekend. Forecasts call for sunny weather and a high near 47 on Saturday.

Still, the threat would present problems for commuters as well as school buses carrying students to Gwinnett schools. GCPS policy is to wait as late as 6 a.m. on the day of classes before deciding whether to cancel.

-- Patch will have continued updates on the weather and on any school closings.
