GEORGIA CUP-DULUTH TWILIGHT CRITERIUM TO DEBUT IN 2014

New bike race for 2014 that will pit the top professional and amateur riders against each other for a $15,000 prize purse.

March 27, 2014-- The inaugural Georgia Cup-Duluth Criterium will debut on August 2nd, 2014 in the streets of Downtown Duluth. With 600 cyclists and 10,000+ spectators this inaugural event will feature some of the top professional and amateur racers in the Southeast region and beyond.  The unique feature of this event will be the twilight races for the Pro Women and Men that evening “Under the lights”.

Criterium racing is one of the most common forms of bike racing in America.  The criterium, is a multi-lap race of 25-60 miles held on a closed generally a mile or less in length. These races, which usually last one to two hours, are extremely fast - 30 MPH and up – as the cyclists jockey for position and sprint for lap “primes’ (cash or merchandise prizes, pronounced “preems”). The short closed course, generally with both right – and left-hand corners, makes this type of racing easy to watch for spectators and more accessible for the media.

This USA Cycling sanctioned and insured event will start at 1:00 PM, and will feature a race for all level of bike riders.  Riders who have not raced, or do not have much experience will have an opportunity to compete at 1:00 PM. The racing will continue throughout the day with a large number of categories and classes available for racers to participate.

The event promoter, James Lowe said, “Our goal is to capitalize on the speed, adrenaline and excitement of professional cycling and use it as a platform from which to promote and encourage family fitness, health, and wellness.”  Lowe added, “The Georgia Cup Duluth Twilight Pro Criterium (Georgia Cup) is more than a professional cycling race. It is a festival of fitness, health, and wellness to promote preventative health.”  During the races, families will benefit from entertainment and fun, free family programming that will help combat the health issues like diabetes and heart disease that affect a disproportionately high percentage of residents in Metro-Atlanta.

The Duluth Twilight will host an exotic culinary excursion featuring mobile food vendors that will capture your taste buds. A beer garden full of all of your favorite beverages to quench your thirst while watching the cyclists race for the title of Georgia Cup - Duluth champion. Live music will flow through the air and children’s laughter coming from the “Kids Corner” featuring inflatables, face painting, games and more..
