More Exaggerations from the NO Side

Get the facts before you vote.

There is an e-mail floating around from the NO City folks. Here are some excerpts.

"In Roswell a new resident was fined $15.00 because their trash container was out front in the street, and it wasn’t collection day.

Do you have a dead tree in your yard? It’s a code violation.

The charter will even make us responsible for sidewalk repair in front of our homes; we could be fined if they are not maintained.”

Guess what? These are code violations in Gwinnett County as
well! If your sidewalk is on private property, you are responsible for
maintaining it! Any sidewalk in the county right of way is the county’s
responsibility.

Here’s another gem.

“As a source of revenue, some small towns and cities throughout
the United States have enacted an ordinance requiring the sale of homes within
the city limits be inspected before the homeowner can put them up for sale.

A code enforcement officer will inspect your home at a cost that will be split
with the city.  Some cities are charging as much as $500 for the
permit.  Any violations will have to be corrected before you will be
allowed to put your home on the market. ”

Code Compliance for the city is exterior maintenance of
buildings and property. This inspection is to see if the home meets current
building codes. It would not be something within city control. The county will
continue to issue building permits and set building standards and codes. The
city will only decide if a site should be zoned a certain way, for example
Office or Commercial. That is it! This is a complete scare tactic on the part
of the NO City folks.

In Johns Creek, a family wanted to enhance their backyard with
a gazebo, fire pit, and seating. The permit was $750, while the entire cost of
the project was less than $900.

Again, we will not be issuing building permits.

We received this e-mail response from a Peachtree Corners
resident who received the initial e-mail. This is published with his
permission.

“Got an e-mail about code enforcement from the NO City folks.

I guess they are unaware of this past spring of 2011 the
Gwinnett County Police and the code enforcement officers appeared on Leaf Land
Drive, Gwinnett County, NOT the Duluth police.
They had 3 police cars and officers and 3 code enforcement pick-up
trucks and went from house to house and issued tickets to over 40% of the homes
in that neighborhood.

They came back 2 weeks later for another round.

Speaking to one resident he spent over one-half day sitting
in court to have it dropped.

Of course he had to go over to Lawrenceville several miles
away rather than 2 miles to the city of Duluth since he is NOT located in
Duluth city limits.

The NO city folks cite one action in Roswell and therefore
no city should be allowed.  Then they
tell about the backyard gazebo, fire pit and seating for $900.   Ha, a brick mailbox is over

$1,000 and very easily up to $2,500.”

These claims are outrageous and designed to scare you into
voting NO. Get the facts. E-mail us at blog@upcca.org.
