Putting the “My” in MyPlate

Here in the South, we like to personalize everything: from monogrammed towels to initials on our back car window. So, why wouldn't we personalize our diets to fit our lifestyle?

Here in the South, we like to personalize everything: from monogramming a set of towels to putting our initials on the back window of our cars. So, why wouldn’t we personalize our diets to fit our lifestyle?

As a Registered Dietitian, I know good nutrition is one of the best defenses against chronic disease. Unfortunately, Americans fall short when it comes to consuming the food groups-- dairy, fruits, vegetables and whole grains – which contain critical nutrients that improve our health.  However, by following the MyPlate guidelines, Americans can ensure they are eating a healthy diet that provides key nutrients. For example, did you know that just adding a glass of milk with meals provides 3 of the 4 nutrients of that Americans are not getting enough of?

Swing by a quick serve restaurant and order oatmeal made with milk and a fruit cup on the side.

Meals with less Meat

Include high-quality protein found in milk, cheese, or yogurt. Dairy is a convenient way to help you get the essential amino acids your body needs. Try this slow cooker veggie lasagna, made with low-fat cheese, a side salad and fat-free yogurt topped with berries for dessertChoose Greek yogurt which has twice the amount of protein as other yogurt.

Busy student on a budget

You can still eat right by stocking smart snacks in your dorm room such as: apples and peanut butter, string cheese and almonds, a banana and cereal with low-fat milk or yogurt and graham crackers.

Family on the go

A quick meal can be nutritious. Kids and adults will love beef fajita quesadillas, fresh fruit and a glass of milk for a weeknight family meal.  And it’s quick and easy to prepare.

Lactose Intolerant

People with lactose intolerance should be reaching for dairy foods first. Avoiding dairy foods means possibly eliminating important nutrients from the diet such as calcium, vitamin D, potassium and magnesium. One of my favorite tips is to drink lactose-free cow’s milk, which is real milk, just with the lactose already broken down for you.
