A BATTLE WITH YELLOW JACKETS!

A government building that we serve has recently had issues with some kind of bees.  Although the nest was outside, the flying insects were getting through to the inside and showing up in the break room on the other side of the wall.  As you can imagine, the employees weren’t too excited about this.

So, we suited up and got ready for war.  After a closer look, the “bees” were actually yellow jackets.  They had set up a nest in a void in the building about 30 feet high.  Yellow jackets often nest underground, so the aerial nest makes it easy to confuse them with bees.  They are sometimes mistaken for honey bees, but yellow jackets are not covered in hair like honey bees.  Yellow jackets can also sting repeatedly making them dangerous to anyone who’s allergic or stung many times.  Colonies are annual.  The only survivors to overwinter are the fertilized queens.  However, in warmer climates, such as in the southeastern United States, nests may survive the winter.  I guess this nest had not gotten the memo that it was time for them to die!

With protective gear on and equipment in hand, we climbed up and sprayed a foam, contact insecticide into the void.  The yellow jackets were not happy with our attack and swarmed all around.  If you look closely at the picture below, you can see lots of dots in the sky.  Those are all yellow jackets!  We sealed up the gaps, only to watch the yellow jackets remake the hole before our eyes.  We resealed and placed a glue board over the opening.  A follow up visit will let us know if our efforts thus far have been successful.
