Open Government

The best government is ... an open government that governs least and provides open communication with its citizens.

The Peachtree Corners Ballot Committee asked the candidates for City Council the following two-part question earlier today.

The pro city initiative advertised an open, transparent government:

a)Would you support a mandate that all actions relative to the formation of rules, regulations and other be reviewed by the citizens of Peachtree Corners for a period of no less than 30 days for comments before a definitive vote is taken by the council on the subject issues?

b) Would you be agreeable to allow council meetings to be streamed live over the net?

I have continued to express the importance of open, transparent government for our new city. I believe in creating the opportunity for citizens of Peachtree Corners to provide input on rules, regulations, and ordinances considered for adoption by City Council and to provide the citizens with information through several media vehicles on issues coming before the City Council. The best government is ... an open government that governs least and provides open communication with its citizens.

The Engage Gwinnett County project provided an example of how all citizens could have access to and input into the challenges facing the county and the meetings were all video tape for the public to see. There is no reason such a concept could not work for our city.
