Michael Sheffield: In Memorial

An Atlanta native and Peachtree Corners resident, Michael Sheffield passed away this past Saturday and will be sorely missed by many in our community and beyond.

Mike Sheffield, age 61 was born on November 3, 1949 and died this past Saturday, February 19, 2011. He is survived by has wife Susan, daughter Olivia, son Matthew, brother Ken and mother Lucy. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Perimeter Church in Johns Creek. Called a “Celebration of Life,” that’s exactly what it was. Many Peachtree Corners residents and friends where there.

There are so many credits to Mike’s name they are too many to list. Before becoming a  criminal defense attorney Mike was Assistant District Attorney for DeKalb County, past president of the Gwinnett Bar Association, the DeKalb Bar Association and the list goes on and on. Also, in 2004 and 2008, he ran in a nonpartisan election for open seats on the state Court of Appeals, but was defeated.

In Peachtree Corners Mike may most likely be remembered as a warm and caring neighbor, someone with a firm handshake, a quick smile and a witty comment to add some mirth and good humor to many a conversation.

To those who know him best he will be thought of as a man who “sought hard after God.” He cared deeply about his faith and his life was a reflection of that. As one friend, Richard Marks, shared, “Mike wasn't just a first-rate attorney and mentor to many younger attorneys; he was a first-rate person who palpably reflected God's love towards others in a way that few are willing to do. Mike was a tremendous source of encouragement to me, both professionally and personally, and he will be missed dearly.”
