Bring your old, worn out US flags to the Peachtree Corners Festival!

The first day of the 2014 Peachtree Corners Festival is Flag Day, June 14. The idea of an annual day specifically celebrating the Flag is believed to have first originated in 1885. Flag Day was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, 1916. While Flag Day was celebrated in various communities for years after Wilson's proclamation, it was not until August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.

A set of rules of civilian flag courtesy popularly known as the Flag Code was first formulated by the National Flag Conference meeting in Washington, June 14-15, 1923. The Flag Code was an attempt by prominent patriotic organizations to collect together in one instrument statutes, executive orders, and rules of established custom and usage relating to the U.S. flag.

To commemorate the occasion, Peachtree Corners Festival will be collecting old, worn, unserviceable flags to be given to the American Legion. The Ceremony for Disposal of Unserviceable Flags is outlined in Resolution No. 440, was passed by the 19th National Convention of The American Legion in New York, Sept. 20-23, 1937. The American Legion will take the flags collected at the Festival and demonstrate the proper method of disposing of the flags to students at a future date.

A colorful bin will be located at the Information booth at the corner of Woodhill Drive and The Corners Parkway. Please bring any older flags you may have at any time during the festival, June 14 from 10 am to 6 pm and June 15 from noon to 5 pm. The festival is located at 6075 The Corners Parkway in Peachtree Corners. See the website for more information, www.peachtreecornersfestival.org.  See More
