As many as 20 people were burned out of their homes by a Tuesday fire at a Peachtree Corners-area apartment complex.
No injuries were reported.
The fire damaged five units at the Mercer Place Apartments on Summit Point.
Several families were displaced and needed Red Cross assistance, Gwinnett Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said.
“A preliminary number of displaced occupants from the building is around 15-20,” Rutledge said in an emailed statement.
Rutledge said crews arrived at the fire at 12:01 p.m. and found a top-floor apartment on fire. The building had already been evacuated.
The fire was under control at 12:35 p.m. It caused heavy damage in the apartment of origin and to four adjoining units.
“The cause of the fire appears accidental and may have started in the area of the laundry room,” Rutledge said.
The exact cause is undetermined and under investigation.
