Rutledge said crews arrived at the fire at 12:01 p.m. and found a top-floor apartment on fire. The building had already been evacuated.

The fire was under control at 12:35 p.m. It caused heavy damage in the apartment of origin and to four adjoining units.

“The cause of the fire appears accidental and may have started in the area of the laundry room,” Rutledge said.

The exact cause is undetermined and under investigation.
