Body of 24-Year-Old Man Found on I-85 in Gwinnett

Police are investigating a fatal accident involving a pedestrian on the interstate between Pleasantdale Road and Jimmy Carter Boulevard.

A road work crew made a gruesome discovery last week while cleaning the road side of the northbound lanes on I-85 - a dead body.

Now police are investigating a fatal accident involving a pedestrian on Interstate 85 between Pleasantdale Road and Jimmy Carter Boulevard that may have occured earlier this month.

On Friday, Jan. 11, shortly after 10 p.m. Gwinnett County Police received calls regarding a male walking northbound on I-85 along the center concrete median and walking into traffic in between Pleasendale Road and Jimmy Carter Boulevard.

Another caller stated that a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in that area. Gwinnett County Police and the Fire Department were dispatched to the area and searched the area but were unable to locate a possible victim.

Then on Wednesday, Jan. 23, a Corrections Work Detail cleaning debris off Dawson Boulevard and Graves Road discovered a dead body next to a concrete barrier near a small ravine which could not be seen off the interstate, according to a news release from Gwinnett County spokesman Cpl. Edwin Ritter.

The body was identified as 24-year-old Leviticus D. Charleston, of Stone Mountain.

Based on the clothing and physical description along with decomposition, investigators believe that Charleston died on scene from the injuries sustained after being struck by a vehicle Jan. 11.

Investigators have spoken with witnesses from that day and are looking for anyone else that can provide additional information leading to the identity of the driver and vehicle that struck Charleston, as well as any other information regarding the accident.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Investigator T.P. Corradino #1410 at 678-442-5624.
