Fire Damages Former Church Building in Peachtree Corners

The Spalding Drive structure was heavily damaged.

Gwinnett Fire Department responded to a report Tuesday night from a passerby who saw smoke and flames pouring out from a building on Spalding Drive that had been used by the Faith Life Fellowship Church.

When firefighters arrived at 9:43 p.m., they found the large two-story building located on the 5700 block of Spalding Drive on fire.

Capt. Tommy Rutledge said in a press release that firefighters found "heavy flames burning in the basement and throughout the second floor and the roof of the building."

Firefighters brought the fire under control an hour later. According to Rutledge the building was empty and no injuries were reported.

"The biggest challenge to fire crews was the size of the building and the magnitude of the fire on arrival," said Rutledge in the release.

Two additional fire engines were brought in to battle the blaze and keep it from spreading to nearby buildings or wooded areas, said Rutledge.

The exact cause of the fire is under investigation. The fire department is trying to locate the building's owner. Firefighters also reported there were signs of previous vandalism to the building but it does not appear to be related to the fire.
