Gas Leak Shuts PIB Down For Several Hours

On Monday around 11:30 a.m. northbound and southbound traffic on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Duluth was stopped, and about 15 businesses were evacuated.

Commuters traveling on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard just before lunch time on Monday (April 8) were re-routed by Duluth Police when a construction crew hit a gas line on the busy stretch of road.

The Gwinnett Fire Department reported fire equipment was dispatched to the scene about 11:16 a.m. according to a news release from Capt. Tommy Rutledge, spokesman for the fire department.

Rutledge reported that Atlanta Gas Light brought a gas leak outside a shopping strip located at 2870 Peachtree Industrial Blvd. in Duluth under control at 1:18 p.m.

Both lanes of PIB, which were closed to traffic, were reopened, and merchants were allowed back into their businesses in the strip shopping center near the gas leak. The leak was also located near Duluth Package Store. About 15 businesses were evacuated. No injuries were reported.

The leak was caused by a construction crew that hit a 2-inch gas line while boring in the area, Rutledge said.
