Norcross Mayor, Nearby Businesses React to Spa Shooting

Mayor Bucky Johnson and neighboring businesses spoke about the murder-suicide that happened so close to downtown Norcross.

 

The apparent  in the city of Norcross has gotten the whole community and country in a stir, making national news via the Huffington Post, the Associated Press and more.

"Five people killed in your town is just mind-boggling," said Mayor Bucky Johnson. "We're just so sorry for those who were killed and the families and the people who just happened to be there when it happened."

Around 8:40 p.m. Tuesday, a man entered at 6005 Buford Highway and fatally shot his two sisters and their husbands, according to Norcross Police press releases.

Police confirmed that it was domestic-related event and that the victims were targeted.

Sonny Lee, owner of next to the spa, said the suspect was one of his customers. He came into the shop for years for oil changes and service repair, but Lee admitted that he didn't know him well.

"He seemed to be a nice guy," said Lee. "I was kind of shocked that he would shoot his family members."

Wednesday morning, Lee said he spoke to the owner of a hair salon inside the spa who was inside during the incident. He said that she believes the incident occurred because of financial issues that had been brewing for a long time.

"It's a family matter, but it's still a shock to our community," said Lee. "We've never had anything happen like this before here. Everyone's talking about it."

"It's a tragedy," said Chuck Paul, president of neighboring business . The hospitality customer-service business is located about a quarter mile away from the spa.

Paul, who also lives in the city, pointed out that since it was not a random act of violence, he doesn't feel less safe than before. "I'm not quite as hyper as I might have been if I didn't know what I do know now," he said.

The mayor agrees that it didn't impact the safety of the city, per se.

"We're very proud of the police response," he said, "but there's no way, in a case like that, to prevent that type of incident. We appreciate everything the police did after the fact, but our hearts go out to the families that were traumatized by the event."

This incident marks six deaths in the city of Norcross this month from fatal gunshot wounds. Norcross High freshman in his home Feb. 2 in what police believe was another targeted event.
