Think Crime has Increased in Gwinnett Over the Last Decade?

Gwinnett Police and FBI statistics show the crime rate has dropped in recent years.

The Gwinnett County Police Department will soon release its complete annual crime report for 2010.

Patch contacted the department for statiscal crime data, and below we have pulled together data over the past 10 years. To see previous annual reports from the department, click here.

In general, the number of calls to the police department has gone down in recent years, with about 432,000 general calls in 2010. That's compared with 530,000 in 2009 and 532,000 in 2008.

The number of traffic calls has decreased over the previous year, with about 194,000 this past year and about 211,000 in 2009. However, in the time between 2000-2008, the number of traffic calls were lower each year than 2010 or 2009.

Part 1 crimes, or crimes that are tracked by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, are also noted below. There has been a 41.6 percent increase in the number of violent crimes against persons, from a total of 1,089 in 2000 and 1,542 in 2010. However, between 2009 and 2010, violent crimes against persons actually dropped by about 350 incidents.

For Part 1 property crimes, burglary, theft or larceny and auto theft, there was a significant drop in crimes over the past several years. There were 13,748 Part 1 property crimes in 2010, which brought the department to levels it hadn't seen in a decade. (One exception is in 2009, when there was also a significant dip from previous years, with 13,701 reported.)

Also, important to note is that the population in Gwinnett County has increased by 53 percent over the past decade. And, an increase population can mean a greater chance for more calls to police, more accidents, more crimes against persons, etc.
