Woman Arrested for Setting Her Apartment on Fire

A number of unusual circumstances tipped police off while investigating this Snellville incident that this was a case of arson.

A Snellville woman has been arrested for setting her apartment on fire on Wednesday. The fire was called in at 5:52 a.m. Wednesday in the 2800 block of Spruce Circle.

Crews were met with smoke and flames that were contained to one room on the second floor. The fire was extinguished and no injuries were reported, according to Gwinnett County Fire Public Information Officer Tommy Rutledge.

Significant smoke was present throughout the second floor.

A few things tipped police and fire investigators off that things were a little odd about the situation. They had already responded twice to calls regarding that location, once for an animal complaint and again when the woman was found in the parking lot with a burning bowl of dog food.

You read that right: a burning bowl of dog food.

The woman was questioned and taken into custody on a drug possession charge. Evidence from the woman's cell phone led to a warrant being taken for first degree arson.

The woman, identified as 25-year-old Charity Nickelson, lived alone in the apartment. She is currently in jail without bond. The crime of first-degree arons is a felony and punishable by twenty years behind bars.

Nickelson was the only tenant in the apartment.
