An Update from Your County Commissioner

Budgets, awards and property maintenance ordinances among the topics.

It's been another great month in Gwinnett, we've just recently balanced the county's budget. Even though we've met this important goal, we will continue to find efficiencies to continue improving the bottom line.

Recently Gwinnett County was awarded the Sustainability Award by the Atlanta Regional Commission for our F. Wayne Hill Water Treatment plant. The reason our county was chosen is due to its forward thinking staff who removes and uses methane gas collected during the water cleaning process to replace 40 percent of our fuel cost used in the heating digesters.

A new state of the art generator was installed a few months ago that will take oils from the processing as well as fats, oils and greases from outside industries and process them in the county's new generator to produce another 40 percent of our fuel costs. Our engineers are working hard for more innovative projects that would allow the plant to someday be self sustaining.

Property Maintenance Ordinance – the top complaint has to be property that is not maintained to the standards of the area such as yards with waist high weeds, front porches rotting off, painting that is halfway completed, windows that are left broken or replaced with boards. Neighborhoods are getting tired of seeing their investment brought down by others that don’t care. We just voted on a new ordinance at the March 15 meeting to try and address these issues.

Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) is growing again. The Grizzlies had a ground breaking for the first phase of their new science lab building. It is scheduled to be open for the new fall school year for the school's 8,000 students. GGC also has a new Student Center that opened two weeks ago. Dr. Dan Kaufman is growing this school to educate the work force of tomorrow. Gwinnett Tech and GGC are making Gwinnett stronger with every student.

Last Tuesday I was on the Atlanta Korean Radio Station with Kevin Kim. We had callers phone in and ask questions. Kevin was busy translating back and forth. This was our third interview, and I am looking forward to our next informative session.

Thanks to everyone that came out to Lucky Shoals Community Center last month for our district’s listening tour.

Please keep your comments coming. Remember the more people that can answer the questions accurately, the stronger our county will be.

 Take Care,
