City Council Tables Two Items, Approves Four at Tuesday Meeting

Peachtree Corners city leaders delayed deciding on two tax-related items but gave go-ahead on a Georgia DOT grant to be used for sidewalk improvement projects. And the mayor announces a new public information officer has been appointed for the city.

The Peachtree Corners City Council quickly worked through the two-page agenda at Tuesday night's meeting tabling a tax-related ordinance and an amendment to an intergovernmental agreement with Gwinnett County involving hotel/motel tax and approving four other items.

"City Council is not ready to move forward with these two items," said City Manager Julian Jackson. "The attorneys for the city and county are still reviewing the documents." The City Council is expected to make a decision on the two related matters at the June 4 meeting.

The City Council did decide on two action items for alcoholic beverage license applications for Life Time Fitness (formerly Racquet Club of the South) and Super Carniceria Jalisco, a new business located on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.

Mayor Mike Mason also took a moment at the beginning of the meeting to introduce Bill Johnson, the city's new public information officer. Johnson will be responsible for providing press releases and information to the citizens.

"City officials have made improved communications with the citizens of Peachtree Corners a top priority and they have directed me to make that happen," said Johnson. "Thanks to Kym Chereck and Diana Wheeler, a complete redesign of the city website is already underway and should be ready for launch early next month.

"My responsibilities include frequent updating of the website, a more aggressive schedule of issuing press releases and publication of a citizen newsletter. It's exciting to be a tiny part of the growth of this new city and humbling to know city officials have entrusted me with the responsibility of helping them to keep citizens informed."

Two other items approved Tuesday night:

The first was the resolution to expand the Gwinnett Village Community Improvement District by including 17 additional Peachtree Corners businesses which includes Newell Recycling.

The CID's borders have not been expanded, but rather additional businesses within its borders have been included. The businesses within a CID consent to paying additional taxes to be used to improve the district in which their properties lie. A portion of the city's borders lies within the CID.

Council also approved a Local Maintenance & Improvement Grant (LMIG) offered by the Georgia Department of Transportation which the city may use for various projects such as paving and sidewalks.

"For 2013 the city is eligible for $128,784 in grant money with a matching contribution of $38,632 by the city," said Jackson. Because that amount is relatively low, explained Jackson, the city may choose to combine the 2013 funds with 2014 which would approximately double the amount it would have for improvements.

A list of proposed sidewalk projects include:

  • Crooked Creek Road
  • Peachtree Industrial Boulevard
  • Holcomb Bridge Road
  • Jones Mill Spur
  • Spalding Drive

The city's next meeting is a Public Hearing on the new Solid Waste Pick Up service. It will be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

The city also has a survey for citizens to take should they not be able to attend. Click here for the online survey. The survey is also posted on the city's website.
