Flash Poll: Georgia Democrats say Paul Ryan Pick for VP can help Obama Win

A Patch panel of Democratic elected officials and activists say the Ryan pick draws a stronger contrast between presidential candidate Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama.

A Patch poll of Georgia Democrats found that most respondents think Mitt Romney’s decision to tap Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate could make it easier for Democrats to paint the GOP ticket as out of touch with the middle class.

“Romney is now absolutely married to the tax breaks for the rich, tax increases for the middle class, gut the programs for everybody but the 1%,” one respondent said.

Most of those who took part in the nonscientific flash poll agreed that Ryan, a Wisconsin congressman, will ‘galvanize’ Democrats in the Peach State. Twenty Democratic elected officials, candidates and activists completed the nonscientific survey over the weekend.

Several respondents said they didn’t think the Ryan selection would make a big different in Georgia, which has been a safe Republican state in the past several presidential races, though it could help Democrats in other key states.

“They [the Romney-Ryan ticket] will have to defend public policy that is antithetical to the needs of middle and working class Americans,” said one respondent.

Respondents overwhelmingly agreed that the Ryan pick would give Democrats a chance to win the presidential race by running against the Congressman’s budget plans, which would reduce spending on Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security. Sixty percent strongly agreed and 30 percent somewhat agreed with the statement, "Now that Ryan is on the ticket, Georgia Democrats can win by running against Ryan's existing budget plans and particularly his proposal for Medicare."

Still, Democratic respondents were less strong in their opinion on whether the Ryan pick would help Democrats win the support of senior citizens in Georgia. Forty percent agreed with that statement and 15 percent somewhat agreed.

When asked if they felt the Ryan nomination would “galvanize” Georgia Democrats, 35 said they strongly agreed and 40 percent said they somewhat agreed.

A similar flash poll of influential Georgia Republicans found enthusiasm for the Romney-Ryan team.

Here are some excerpts from the Democratic respondents:

  • “He’s not from the South – can’t imagine he’s going to win over undecideds in Georgia.”
  • “Senior citizens will be pushed toward President Obama because of Ryan's Medicare voucher plan.”
  • “The CEO has hired a brilliant and youthful CFO.”

Your boy is being bought by his corporate masters .Thanks to the bad decision on the Citizens United case by the supreme court, you have lost your democracy to multi- national corporations.Paul Ryan is what he is a radical right winger and like Newt not very smart.

Well said! I would add that medical care is just not like buying a TV or car.Gee Doc, I need to get three quotes on that gall blatter operation before I can proceed. Also, think about all those elderly people with with some diminished mental capacity making buying decisions on a complicated medical insurance plan. These are real life practical realities that people like Paul Ryan at age 42 don't understand.
SeniorSoon August 15, 2012 at 08:31 pm
Exactly! The ACA limits administrative costs to 15% or less and that's why some employers, employees and those who pay for private insurance are now getting getting refund checks in the mail. Going forward providers must keep their costs below that threshold.
There are many ways to fix Medicare that will not take away the safety net for seniors and other vulnerable people. But any plan MUST address the escalating cost of health care and the Ryan plan does not do that at all. He leaves it up to the "free market" (which = for-profit corporations). We all saw in 2008 how well they've been looking out for us!

Paul Ryan, Sr. died when he was 55. Ryan, Jr. collected Social Security survivor benefits until he was 18 years old. But they didn’t go directly to supporting his family; by his own account, he banked them for college. He went to Miami University of Ohio, paying twice as much tuition as an Ohio resident would have if he had gone to the in-state University of Wisconsin system. After his government-subsidized out-of-state education, he went to work for government!

"After his government-subsidized out-of-state education, he went to work for government!"
Is that what Social Security is? A government subsidy? I've been paying into Social Security for nearly 40 years. I'd like to think that it's my money if I ever see it, not a government subsidy.
Micaela August 15, 2012 at 09:24 pm
I think Paul Ryan wants to turn Social Security over to Wall Street and Medicare over to private insurance companies, since they are some of his biggest backers. Future seniors will be thrown under the bus; current seniors will not be affected because Ryan wants their votes!
Paul Wallace August 15, 2012 at 09:28 pm
That's it. You have it all figured out. Good for you. *
bob August 15, 2012 at 09:50 pm
Better than you Paulie. You can say what you want on the net. But we all know you're a liar. That's how liberals advance their position. They lie. Just like you lied about all of the companies you say you own.
Paul Wallace August 15, 2012 at 09:54 pm
What are you talking about bobby? When did I comment on all the companies I own? Please point that one out for everyone or go back to your x-box and stay out of adult conversations.
don simpson August 15, 2012 at 09:57 pm
Social Security is not broke. From about 1985 on more money was collected in payroll taxes than was needed to pay benefits. The intent of the extra tax collection was to pay for the baby boomers when they retired. That money went into bonds that the government is obligated to pay off when Social Security needs the money. If nothing else is done the Social Security trustees will start turning those bonds in to get the money needed to help pay benefits to the baby boomers, as intended. With this money the trust fund is solvent for about the next twenty five years even under the worse financial conditions, which correspond to us continuing to have the economic policies collectively known as supply side economics.
There are people who don't believe that the general revenue fund should have to pay back these bonds, that we should effectively default on them. But even under these conditions Social Security wouldn't be bankrupt, they would slowly reduce benefits as they exceeded receipts from the payroll tax. But this would require further legislation to default on the bonds and anyone who voted to default would have to answer to the voters for reducing Social Security benefits.

Go back and read your own posts, I wont do your work for you. You, typical liberal, bragged about all the companies you own. By the way moron, I don't own an x box. I'm too busy working than to play childish games. By the way, I work for a man that believes in America, and when Obama was selected he swore to not hire until he was deselected. He's held to that, and out company, which you don't own is successful beyond the Obama model. This man built his business, without the help of the moron in chief.
bob August 15, 2012 at 10:13 pm
Just as I thought, Paulie is not going to respond. When a lib is confronted with facts, they retreat.
Tammy Osier August 15, 2012 at 10:29 pm
There is no plan to completely privitize it. Liberals have to keep sayingthat (hoping taht will make it true?). Here it is again so the conversation can get back on track (Ryan's words):
Overall funding for Medicare under the Ryan-Wyden plan is scheduled to grow at the same rate as under President Obama’s proposals. Is this “gutting Medicare” and “ending Medicare as we know it”? In reality, it’s the market giving seniors cheaper, higher quality choices they can take if they wish, with the traditional program remaining an option.
don simpson August 15, 2012 at 11:22 pm
Of course Medicare and Medicaid are in trouble because of the run away costs of medical care. These costs have spiraled out of control over the last thirty years as more and more of the health care industry in the US has been converted from a non-profit into a for profit business model. Health care is an extremely poor place to experiment with the for profit way of doing business. We all, not just Medicare, are paying the price for this experiment.
Only Global warming is as big of a problem facing the country as the run away costs of medical care. Neither is made any easier by the fact that one of our major parties representing nearly half of the country refuse to face either problem, preferring to ignore both.
Micaela August 16, 2012 at 11:16 am
I still don't understand how these choices can be cheaper and higher quality when private plans have much higher administrative costs.
SeniorSoon August 16, 2012 at 11:42 am
Vouchers are going to be for everyone 55 and under, including those who choose the government option. That IS ending Medicare as we know it. And that's the Ryan plan--to shift the cost difference between the voucher amount and the escalating costs of private provider services onto the backs of seniors.
And while both proposals a project similar funding rate, unlike the Obama's plan, the Ryan plan has proposed zero cost controls. The money saved from capping Medicare funding and strict cost control in Obama's plan will be returned to Medicare to continue to fund the program. The money saved from capping Medicare funding in the Ryan plan will be used to fund tax cuts (and not for the middle class!) Seniors will be the ones who bear the burden of greater out-of-pocket costs.

I'm no Republican but.......A "nonscientific flash poll of Georgia's Democrats" came to an anti-Republican conclusion. Isn't that like asking George Clooney who his favorite actor is?
I don't see the point of an article with as little to discuss as a "nonscientific flash pole of Georgia Democrats". To be fair, I would not see the point of an article discussing a nonscientific flash poll of Georgia Republicans either. Jesus Christ, get a life.

George- You said "As the owner of three corporations ,thanks to the "Citizens United" decision I can give" Then you said, "All I can say is that you have already lost your freedom to the corporations..."
Who's side are you on? I am sure I am missing something here. Please explain.
Racer X August 16, 2012 at 12:21 pm
The only people who don't shop health care are getting it paid for by someone else.
Racer X August 16, 2012 at 12:25 pm
I think if you look at total administrative costs of plans rather than percentages you will see different numbers. Also, I will never be so naive as to believe Medicare's administrative costs are an actual 3%. There is a lot more to that picture.

My companies could be better described as small businesses.I'm referring to large multi national corporations that have no loyalty to any country. They contribute millions not hundreds.
George Wilson August 16, 2012 at 02:32 pm
@MikeHorsman
A perfrct example of what I'm talking is the billionaire casino mogul,Sheldon Adelman, who gave over 10 million to the Gingrich campaign.Adelman met with Republican operatives in Israel doing the Romney visit. He has promised the Romney campaign millions. What are Adelman's motives? War with Iran, support of Israel's policies,or moving money from his Chinese casinos at a tax advantage to the United States. All of the above?
SeniorSoon August 16, 2012 at 06:13 pm
I think a lot of people are trying to keep their life, Mike, and quite a bit of that depends on which road the government on Medicare. But yeah, for a serious discussion there needs to be a serious thread/topic. Have you seen one here?
Thanks, Brian. I saw that you ventured into the Republican Flash Poll thread and all I can say is....you're a better person than I am! :-)

That is the point my friend. He got help from dead but rich Dad.Romney went to business with dead fathers influence and fame. Now these same people want to shut the door for others who need help and who do not have inherited advantages. Romney says if you want to start business, borrow money from your parents and treats coporations like people

If you are deceased, your infant children( Paul Ryan) through college (age21) receive SS benefits

This touches one of the problems with a Fri pick up schedule. Folks who take weekend trips areRead More caught with either leaving the cans out or missing out by not putting their trash out. Since homeowners have zero choices under our government mandated trash plan to pay in advance for service without the ability to change carriers with different pick up dates, leaving the cans out is the results.
