Gwinnett OKs Over $158,000 for Senior Citizens Transportation

Gwinnett County on Tuesday (March 19) approved funds that will provide essential transportation for senior citizens.

The Board of Commissioners approved $158,768 for a six-month contract with state officials to provide transport services for seniors, for such things as medical visits and meals at senior centers. The approval runs through June 30.

In other matters Tuesday, commissioners:

• Approved upgrading the intersection of Arcado Road and Camp Creek Road/Cole Drive in Lilburn. The City of Lilburn would fund 50 percent of the project, for $65,000. Gwinnett's portion would come from 2009 SPLOST monies.

• OK'd pedestrian improvements at Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and McGinnis Ferry Road in Suwanee. The improvements will be raised pedestrian islands at the intersection, one of the city's busiest. Suwanee will provide half the funding, at $75,000. Gwinnett again would use SPLOST funds for its share.
• Approved improvements that include the area around Simonton Elementary in unincorporated Lawrenceville. Funding of about $974,000 was approved for improvements to aid visibility for vehicles entering Simonton Road from McCart Road and Simonton Glen Drive, by lowering the hill between the intersections. Also, plans call for new sidewalks from Simonton Elementary to nearby neighborhoods. Work should be completed in late 2013 or early 2014.
