Peachtree Corners: The Choice Today For A Better Tomorrow

Why I Support The City of Peachtree Corners

I believe in Peachtree Corners.  Unlike a small few, I believe that this area that I call home is primed and ready to advance itself both economically and socially.  We have a wonderful community that is inviting and welcoming to all that want to settle here.  Technology Park is still thriving despite these difficult economic times.  We have Dick’s Sporting Goods moving into the area which, with its proven staying power and a leader in its industry, will be a job-creator for local residents.  The Forum still provides enjoyable shopping and dining experiences for all ages.  You can get a great meal followed by some of the county’s best cheesecake at Boulevard Diner.  And you’ll always find excellent prices on gas at the Peachtree Corners QT.  This area has evolved beyond its humble beginnings, yet it still holds true to being a place that prides itself as one of the best work, live, play communities in the state.  For this and many additional reasons, I support, endorse, and will vote for the referendum for Peachtree Corners to become a city.

Everyday I speak with neighbors, business owners, renters and home owners, most of which I find would be inclined to vote for the referendum in November.  After further evaluation, the support is close to 90%!  Opponents argue about tax increases, but when the idea that we will only be paying close to $10 a month per the 1 millage rate for services other cities pay more for, their arguments loses its grounding.  The idea of local control, planning and zoning, code enforcement, and solid waste pickup shows that our city will function as effectively and efficiently as any other of the 15 cities here in Gwinnett.

Some will even make the complaint that this is the dream child of a handful of individuals in the UPCCA, or that this is solely based on denying land acquisition by surrounding cities.  I take different views on each of these theories.  First, and personally, it is not the fear of annexation that drives me to support the referendum.  Just as we in Peachtree Corners will do what we have to do for our future, other cities will do what they have to do to secure theirs.  What inspires me to support cityhood is my daughter.  My wife and I believe that she deserves more while growing up than just an area that is referred to as “unincorporated.”  She deserves a place where its citizens worked vigorously to establish its identity.  A place where neighbors came together and chose to build a greater future for themselves, their families, and all whom live here. The legacy of Peachtree Corners is something that my daughter will inherit. Until then, as a father, I will work tirelessly to make sure that it is a strong and prosperous legacy.

Second, a handful of men from the original 13 colonies came together in Philadelphia and set a new course for what we today call the United States of America.  They did not all agree with each other’s political beliefs, but they knew that when signing the Declaration of Independence, they were doing it for the people that represented, as will as future generation.  That representation and giving the people a voice is what built this great nation.  Same goes for what will make Peachtree Corners the great city it is destined to be: citizen representation and participation.

Who are we if we are not able to govern ourselves?  Who are we if we do not have a voice in what happens in our own neighborhoods?  What are we teaching our children if we give up the right to have a choice?  On November 8, you will have a choice, and that choice will determine the future for us all.  It is for the good and prosperity of our future that I will be saying “YES” to Peachtree Corners.
